No, you don't need Season 1. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is a standalone, 10-episode story set in Night City with a new set of characters, and all episodes have been on Netflix since October 20, 2026. Season 1 gives you a feel for the city and its rules, and it's one of the best anime of the 2020s, but the new season is built so you can start here.

The quick facts

Release October 20, 2026, all episodes at once
Episodes 10
Platform Netflix (exclusive)
Studio Studio Trigger, with CD Projekt Red
Director Kai Ikarashi (returning from Season 1, per pre-release reports)
Story Standalone; new characters, same Night City
Game tie-in Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5, the "Edgerunners 2 Update"

Release timing is the same as Season 1 in 2022: a full-season drop instead of weekly episodes. If you're a binge watcher, this is the easy one this fall. If you prefer weekly, Netflix's other big anime this season is Steel Ball Run.

Is Edgerunners 2 connected to Season 1?

Only through the setting. AWN's teaser coverage and launch-week reporting describe it as a standalone Night City story, and the pre-release reporting indicates that the main cast of Season 1 does not return as leads. There is no story continuation to follow.

That is a deliberate choice, and an understandable one. (Light Season 1 spoiler ahead.) Season 1 closed its own story so completely that a direct sequel would have undercut it. Starting over with new characters lets Trigger keep the tone without reopening an ending fans are protective of.

Where does it fit in the Cyberpunk timeline?

It's in the same universe as Cyberpunk 2077 and the first season. We couldn't find an official year for the new story in a source we trust, so we won't guess one. For watching purposes it doesn't matter: nothing in Season 2 relies on you knowing the game's plot.

Your situation What to do
Never seen any Cyberpunk Watch Season 2 if you want the new thing; watch Season 1 first if you want the best experience
Seen Season 1 Go straight to Season 2
Played Cyberpunk 2077 only Either works. Season 1 has more callbacks to the game's world
Want the game tie-in Watch the show, then try Update 2.5 in the game

Our pick (opinion): Season 1 first. It's 10 episodes, it sets up Night City's cruelty better than any explainer, and you'll understand why so many people are measuring Season 2 against it.

What are critics saying?

The early reaction is positive but more mixed than for Season 1. GamesRadar+ titled its review "Another nova Night City story" and argued that it doesn't reach the emotional peak of the first season. Other launch-week roundups called it spectacular to look at but less monumental than its predecessor. Fan reaction on social media is split, and a common complaint is that the central relationships hit less hard.

This is our opinion after reading the room: if you go in expecting Season 1's gut punch, you'll be a little let down. If you go in expecting a stylish, violent, very Trigger anthology entry in a city you already like, it delivers.

The Cyberpunk 2077 update

CD Projekt Red tied a game update to the launch: Update 2.5, officially the "Edgerunners 2 Update", announced for October 22, 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Nintendo Switch 2 to follow. Check the game's patch notes for exact contents. We're not listing items we haven't verified.

Is it worth watching? Our verdict

This is opinion. Yes, if you like Trigger's style or Night City itself. The action direction and colour work are as loud and inventive as anything on TV this year, and 10 episodes is a tidy commitment for a weekend. Lower your expectations if Season 1 was your favourite anime ever. It isn't trying to repeat that story, and comparing the two will make Season 2 look smaller than it is.

The best way to watch it, in our view: one or two episodes a night rather than a single marathon. The violence and the sensory overload work better with a little space, and the quieter episodes get lost in a binge.

Spoiler policy

This page stays spoiler-free for Season 2. If you've finished it and want the ending discussed, we'll cover that in a separate, clearly labelled post.
