Sekiro: No Defeat starts streaming on Crunchyroll in January 2027 as an 8-episode series. It's exclusive to Crunchyroll worldwide except Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus. As of November 2, 2026, Crunchyroll hasn't announced the exact premiere day.
If you've been following this one, it's confusing for a reason: it was first promised for 2026, then came out in Japanese cinemas as a film in September. Here is what has actually been confirmed and what's still open.
Sekiro: No Defeat release date at a glance
| What | Date / detail | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Anime announced | August 19, 2025 (gamescom Opening Night Live) | Done |
| Theatrical film, Japan | From September 4, 2026, three-week run | Done, extended |
| Extra screenings, Japan | From October 2, 2026 | Done |
| TV broadcast, Japan | January 2027, 8 episodes | Channel and day TBA |
| Crunchyroll streaming | January 2027, 8 episodes | Day and time TBA |
Some sites already give a specific January day. We couldn't find it in Crunchyroll's announcement or in the trade coverage, so treat any exact date as unconfirmed until Crunchyroll posts it. UnGeek reports that the episodes will be released weekly, but the other coverage we checked doesn't mention a schedule.
Film or series? Why there are two versions
The plan changed in public:
- August 2025: Crunchyroll said it would stream the anime in 2026.
- September 2026: Japan got a theatrical edition first, opening on September 4 for three weeks. It opened at #9 at the box office and earned ¥99,842,200 (about US$649,000) in its first three days, according to Anime News Network. Extra screenings were added from October 2.
- Late September 2026: the staff announced that the film would be rebuilt into an 8-episode TV series with new content, airing in Japan in January. Crunchyroll then confirmed it will stream that series version in January 2027, not the film.
So the cinema cut was the condensed version, and the eight episodes are the full story. For viewers outside Japan, the wait pays off: you get the longer version.
Our take (opinion): splitting it into episodes makes sense for Sekiro. The game is built around one-on-one duels you fail again and again. A single film has to rush from boss to boss, while episodes can give each fight its own build-up.

Where to watch Sekiro: No Defeat
| Region | Where | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| US, Europe, Latin America, Oceania, most of the world | Crunchyroll | Exclusive, from January 2027 |
| India | Crunchyroll | Confirmed separately for January 2027 |
| Japan | TV broadcast (channel TBA) | Theatrical film screened from Sep 4, 2026 |
| China, Korea, Russia, Belarus | Not covered by the Crunchyroll deal | No other platform announced |
Crunchyroll hasn't said whether there will be an English dub at launch or only subtitles. Its press release names only the Japanese voice cast, so plan on subtitles at first.

What is Sekiro: No Defeat about? (no spoilers)
It adapts FromSoftware's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, released in March 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The setting is a Japan split into warring states, centred on the land of Ashina. Twenty years after the Sword Saint Isshin Ashina took the region, a new threat arrives from the Interior Ministry. Isshin's grandson Genichiro turns to forbidden powers to defend it. Ashina's hope rests on a kidnapped boy, the Divine Heir, and his shinobi protector, Sekiro, also called Wolf.
You don't need to have played the game. If you have, expect familiar faces, from the Sculptor and Emma to Owl.
